Jains believe that animals and plants, as well as human beings, contain living souls. Each of these souls is considered of equal value and should be treated with respect and compassion. They will not eat meat or any vegetable that grows underground and do not harm insects or any other living creature.
The 5 mahavratas (the 5 great vows) are: non-attachment to possessions, not lying, not stealing, non-violence, and celibacy.
Jainism is a religion where the followers are expected to help themselves towards salvation, through thinking and acting in the proper way. Worship is mostly done individually.
